Why Halloween Is More Than Just Candy: A Love Letter to Spooky Season

Ahhh … the month of October is nigh upon us, for it is September 1st! Crazy that I’m posting in the 13 Days of Halloween this early. The last time I was this early for something, I was standing in line with my daughter waiting to see Twilight’s New Moon in theatres. Yeah, that’s right! And I was Team Edward, beeteedubbs. Listen, it checked all the boxes: ✅chaulk full of teen angst, ✅forbidden love, ✅drama-drama-drama-drama, and – most importantly – ✅something my daughter and I bonded over (even though she was Team Jacob 🙄). Anywho – yay me for starting the postings earlier than ever before, and that’s because everyone I know (including myself) who loves Halloween is becoming giddy with excitement and prepping for that most wonderful time of year. Some die-hards of the holiday have taken to calling the entire month of September “Halloween Eve.”

You know what I think of that?
Hell. Yes. Bring it on.

I love listening to others share some of their most fun (or wild) Halloween memories, especially the childhood ones. They get a faraway look in their eyes as their words take them back to that moment in time. I, in turn, share stories of all of the Halloweens I’ve shared with my kids and friends. And you know what? Not a single recalled memory or retold tale EVER centers around the candy haul. (Even though the industry would have us believing differently.) Nope! That’s not why people love Halloween. That’s not why I love Halloween … let me tell ya why … but in a letter.

Let the spooky season begin!

Cue music …
